Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Good

for Beginners?

If you've been thinking about trying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu but have never stepped onto the mats before, you're not alone. One of the most common questions we hear is, "Can I really start Jiu-Jitsu if I have no experience?"

The answer is yes.

At Street Sports BJJ, many of our students walked through the door as complete beginners. Some hadn't exercised in years. Others had never participated in any martial art. What they all had in common was a willingness to learn.

Our goal is to make your first experience enjoyable, educational, and free from the intimidation that many people expect when they think of martial arts.

You Don’t Need Experience to Start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

One of the biggest myths about BJJ is that you need to be athletic before your first class.

You don't.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is designed to be learned over time. Every student begins with the same fundamentals:

  • How to move safely

  • Basic positions

  • Escapes

  • Defensive techniques

  • Simple submissions

  • Working with training partners respectfully

Our instructors guide you step by step so you can build confidence while developing solid technique.

No.

Many people join because they want to improve their fitness.

Regular BJJ training naturally develops:

  • Cardiovascular endurance

  • Functional strength

  • Mobility

  • Balance

  • Coordination

  • Flexibility

You don't get in shape before starting Jiu-Jitsu.

Why Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Is One of the Best Martial Arts for Beginners.

What Your First Class Looks Like

One of the biggest concerns new students have is not knowing what to expect.

At Street Sports BJJ, your first class is designed to help you feel comfortable.

You'll receive guidance on:

  • How class is structured

  • Basic safety rules

  • Fundamental techniques

  • Drilling with partners

  • Asking questions

  • Training at your own pace

There's no pressure to know everything on day one. Everyone starts somewhere.

Unlike striking arts that require quick reactions and coordination from day one, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu emphasizes leverage, timing, and technique.

You'll learn how to solve problems using skill rather than strength.

Many beginners enjoy BJJ because every class feels like solving a puzzle rather than simply exercising.

As your knowledge grows, so does your confidence.

Are You Too Old To Start?

Absolutely not.

Many of our students began training in their 30s, 40s, and 50s.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can be adapted to different ages, fitness levels, and athletic backgrounds.

Progress isn't determined by age—it's determined by consistency.

A Supportive Community Makes the Difference

The environment where you train matters just as much as the techniques you learn.

At Street Sports BJJ, beginners train alongside experienced students who remember exactly what it was like to be new.

Our culture emphasizes:

  • Respect

  • Patience

  • Safety

  • Encouragement

  • Continuous learning

We believe everyone deserves a place where they feel comfortable asking questions and improving at their own pace.

Beginners Who are Consistent Succeed in

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

When Jurri (pictured far left) first joined Street Sports BJJ he had no martial arts experience.

Like a lot of beginners, Jurri was a little nervous during his first few weeks of training. Within a few weeks, Jurri got over those nerves, start learning techniques, making friends, and wondering why he waited so long to start.

Today (July 5th, 2026) Jurri earned his Purple belt at Street Sports BJJ. He’s now an advanced practitioner, a formidable opponent, an awesome training partner, and will be training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for life!

Staying consistent, learning, and having fun is what helped Jurri get to this milestone.
