What Should You Expect During Your First Jiu-Jitsu Class?

Walking into your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class can feel exciting—and a little intimidating.

If you've never trained before, it's completely normal to wonder what will happen, whether you'll be able to keep up, or if everyone else will be more experienced than you.

The good news is that nearly every student at Street Sports BJJ has had those same thoughts before their first class.

Our goal is simple: make your introduction to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu enjoyable, welcoming, and educational. You don't need any experience, you don't need to be in perfect shape, and you don't need to know anything about martial arts before you arrive.

Here's exactly what you can expect.

You’ll Be Welcomed, Not Tested

One of the biggest misconceptions about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is that your first class is some kind of trial by fire.

It isn't.

At Street Sports BJJ, your first visit is about learning—not proving yourself.

When you arrive, we'll introduce you to the instructor, show you around the academy, explain how class works, and answer any questions you have before training begins.

Our instructors know you're new, and they'll guide you through each step so you can focus on learning instead of worrying about doing everything perfectly.

You’ll Learn Fundamental Techniques

Your first class isn't about memorizing dozens of moves.

Instead, you'll begin with the building blocks of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, such as:

  • Basic positions

  • Movement and balance

  • Escaping common situations

  • Safe training habits

  • Simple control techniques

Every lesson builds on the one before it, helping you develop confidence while creating a solid technical foundation.

You Won’t Be Expected to Know Anything

One concern we hear all the time is:

"I'm worried everyone else will know what they're doing except me."

Every experienced student in our academy started exactly where you are now.

Our classes are designed to support beginners while still challenging more experienced students.

You'll never be expected to "keep up" with advanced students. Your only job is to learn something new each time you step onto the mats.

What Should You Wear?

For your first class, comfortable athletic clothing is usually all you need.

A T-shirt or rash guard paired with athletic shorts (without zippers or exposed pockets) is a great place to start.

If you're attending a Gi class and don't yet own a uniform, let us know before your visit. We'll explain your options and help you get started.

We have clean loaner gis available for you to borrow as well.

Will You Have To Spar?

This is probably the question we hear most often.

The answer depends on your experience level, comfort, and the class format.

Many beginners spend their first class learning techniques and becoming familiar with the movements before participating in live training.

If you do participate in sparring later on, you'll be paired appropriately and encouraged to focus on learning rather than winning.

Safety and learning always come first.

You Don’t Need to Be in Shape

Many people delay trying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu because they think they should get fit first.

The truth is, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu helps you build fitness naturally.

Students often notice improvements in:

  • Cardiovascular endurance

  • Functional strength

  • Mobility

  • Coordination

  • Balance

  • Confidence

Everyone starts at a different fitness level, and that's perfectly okay.

The Community Might Surprise You

One of the reasons so many people stay with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the sense of community they discover.

At Street Sports BJJ, you'll train alongside people from a variety of backgrounds, including professionals, parents, college students, and longtime martial artists.

You'll quickly find that everyone remembers what it was like to be new, and most students are eager to help beginners feel welcome

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the first class?

Most classes last about an hour. Your instructor can tell you the expected length before you arrive.

Can I watch a class before participating?

Yes. If observing a class first would make you more comfortable, let us know. We're happy to help you decide what feels right for you.

Do I need to bring any equipment?

Just bring comfortable workout clothes, water, and a willingness to learn. We'll explain any additional equipment if you decide to continue training.

What if I'm nervous?

That's completely normal. Most new students are a little nervous before their first class, but those feelings often disappear once training begins and they see how welcoming the environment is.

Can I start even if I'm older or out of shape?

Absolutely. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is practiced by adults of many ages and fitness levels, and classes can be adapted to meet you where you are.
